Looking For Alaska

The Author: John Green
Published: April 1st 2011
Pages:263

Synopsis:  "In the dark beside me, she smelled of sweat and sunshine and vanilla and on that thin-mooned night I could see little more than her silhouette, but even in the dark, I could see her eyes -- fierce emeralds. And not just beautiful, but hot too."

BEFORE. Miles Halter's whole life has been one big non-event until he starts at anything-but-boring Culver Creek Boarding School and meets Alaska Young. Gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, screwed up and utterly fascinating she pulls Miles into her world, launches him into a new life, and steals his heart. But when tragedy strikes, and Miles comes face-to-face with death he discovers the value of living and loving unconditionally. AFTER: Nothing will ever be the same. Poignant, funny, heartbreaking and compelling, this novel will stay with you forever.

What i thought of the cover: Out of the several different coves that are available I do prefer this one because I love the way the heart is in the water and how it symbolises deep emotion, also cause I think it looks pretty too of course. Of course I’m a geek for photography and even at times photo manipulation, so this simple cover I adore.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars

What i thought of the story: Being somewhat put off by Will Grayson Will Grayson, which I didn’t like very much, I wasn’t really in a hurry to pick up any books by the two authors, however Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns were two of the books I wanted to read long before Will Grayson Will Grayson was ever out so when I saw Looking for Alaska in The Works I picked it up thinking why not since this was a different story. I’m very glad I did for this story was fantastic though it is defiantly an older teen read for there are some parts which are a bit … not what younger people should be reading. The question of the meaning of life and what happens after death is one that people have been trying to answer for many many years and this book dose get you thinking about all the possibilities to answer the questions, being there so many different answers though there really isn’t a true answer out there and sometimes that can really hit people at home like Miles in the story. John Green done a great job of portraying Miles emotions going from one thing to the next like how a lot of us can be at times. He’s defiantly done well with the humour though I loved the pranks they pulled off the best (Which he actually based off what he and his friends done for their senior prank http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lht_JH2xi6w) Genius or what.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars

Now since I’m a senior and only have a year and a bit of school left, what should our ultimate school prank be, providing I can get the whole year involved and not get arrested in the process. This could be harder than I thought.

P.S The worst anyone has really ever done for the S6 last day school prankathon is put golden syrup on the school banisters, TP the teachers cars and protest for gay peoples rights (all in the same day and that was when I was in S4).

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

The Author: Lewis Carroll
Published: 1897
Pages: 76

Synopsis: Alice finds herself in a most curious adventure when she decides to follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole. Things are never as they appear as Alice soon discovers with the people and creatures she meets and the mischief she gets herself into.

What i thought of the story: Alice in wonderland has always been a popular theme in many things I’ve read and watched but I always wanted to read the original story to see what actually happened with Alice in her wonderland. There were things I expected such as the famous mad hatters tea party and the queen of hearts “Off with her head” but there were many things I found which I was unfamiliar with. I found that a lot of the characters I thought I knew are actually portrayed quite differently from how I thought they would be but that was all the more reason to read the story. I also expected there to be other characters in the story that weren’t so I’m left to assume that they are in the second version of Lewis Carrols story called Through the looking glass which at some point in the future I hope to read. It’s a lovely children’s classic that’s been enjoyed since way way way before I was born and at some point I think everyone should read it, for the terminology isn’t as hard as I thought it would be and it really is great to know the original story compared to other versions out there.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars
Now how dose one "shut up like a telescope."

Beautiful Creatures

The Author: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Published: February 4th 2010
Pages: 563

Synopsis: In Ethan Wate's hometown there lies the darkest of secrets ...There is a girl. Slowly, she pulled the hood from her head. Green eyes, black hair. Lena Duchannes. There is a curse. On the Sixteenth Moon, the Sixteenth Year, the Book will take what it's been promised. And no one can stop it. In the end, there is a grave. Lena and Ethan become bound together by a deep, powerful love. But Lena is cursed and on her sixteenth birthday, her fate will be decided. Ethan never even saw it coming.

What i thought of the cover: The title is defiantly an eye catcher with it’s unique font as well as I love the colour purple and it’s metallic. The shadowy metallic trees give it a sense of mystery and darkness. It’s quite a nice design, simple yet detailed.

I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars

What i thought of the story: The only other story I can think of where I have read from the males point of view is Breaking Dawn and that was about three years ago, however I found that this was written just as well as any book from a females point view. I loved how there is different elements of magic, form Ammas way to the caster way which makes it much more enchanting. At times though It can feel as if Lena is a bit to much doom and gloom and is ready too easily to give up. Overall there was a good balance between good and evil in both magic and normal situations and defiantly loads of unexpected events take place eventually tying together for a dramatic finish.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars

Now to see what happens in the second book.

The Night Circus

The Author: Erin Morgentern
Published: September 15th 2011
Pages: 387

Synopsis: In 1886, a mysterious travelling circus becomes an international sensation. Open only at night, constructed entirely in black and white, Le Cirque des Reves delights all who wander its circular paths and warm themselves at its bonfire. Although there are acrobats, fortune-tellers and contortionists, the Circus of Dreams is no conventional spectacle. Some tents contain clouds, some ice. The circus seems almost to cast a spell over its aficionados, who call themselves the reveurs - the dreamers. At the heart of the story is the tangled relationship between two young magicians, Celia, the enchanter's daughter, and Marco, the sorcerer's apprentice. At the behest of their shadowy masters, they find themselves locked in a deadly contest, forced to test the very limits of the imagination, and of their love...A fabulous, fin-de-siecle feast for the senses and a life-affirming love story, The Night Circus is a captivating novel that will make the real world seem fantastical and a fantasy world real.

What i thought of the cover: Out of the several covers available for this book, I would defiantly say in my opinion that this one was my favourite out of them all. I love how the stars sparkle silver for a great twinkling effect and how most of the colour is black and white keeping to the theme of the circus in the book aswell as how the red scarf stands out also relating to the book in it’s own way. Most of all I love the way the white silhouettes of the two main characters are designed, giving a mysterious and magical feel.

I give it a 5 out of 5 stars

What i thought of the story: I am not used to reading books where every chapter follows a different person that lets you see what their role in the story is, but I must say I love how this is achieved throughout the book for it lets you know more than just what the main characters are thinking and how they are tied into the plot that comes together for an unexpected ending. At points in the book you actually feel as if you are part of the crowd at the circus witnessing all the excitement and you might even feel as if yourself are a part of the reveurs ( Let‘s just say next time I go to a circus I‘m looking out for people in black with red scarves on). Though at times the plot could go be a bit slow paced the story was very addicting (So much so I stayed up the whole night to finish it) and indeed it let my imagination wander far into depths of believing the unbelievable.

I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars

Now it’s just up to the imagination from where the circus goes on from there.

Well Hello There

Finally i can start doing written reviews on books as well as making videos for my youtube channel. Why you might ask, because when it comes to videos i can't make them all the time and i may wish to review them as soon as possible. Well since i'm kind of new to this written review thing, it should be intresting to see what turn this blog takes starting with a review on The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
